Will History Repeat Itself…

In the mid 70′s the emergence of an underground genre of music started to come to the forefront, that genre was disco! Disco exploded onto the scene and quickly dominated the music world bringing other genres to their knees. But once the former underground sound became mainstream the original disco fans began to fall out. Disco started to lose some steam, which led to the Disco Sucks movement which would eventually drive disco out of mainstream and back into the underground! Fast forward to the present. Over the past few years ‘EDM’ (electronic dance music) has begun to take its time in the sun and enjoy more mainstream success! With 2012 and 2013 marking the emergence of numerous new festivals catering to this genre, arena tours, the takeover of predominantly rock festivals and crossover to mainstream radio, EDM has solidified its place on top right now. Like any genre that comes from underground it takes on a whole world of critics. These critics challenge the craft, they feel that anyone can do it. I guess my question is there’s no telling what the future holds for EDM but does the genre suffer the same fate as disco? Will the original fans deplete leaving EDM to slowly fade back into the shadows?

Feel free to chime in in the comments!! We would love to hear your opinions on the genre and where you think it’s headed!

Song Dare

Couple of times in the past week I was driving home and I was in two different moods. One annoyed and frustrated and the other happy and excited! On both occasions I experienced something rather remarkable. I was able to come to a neutral mood in both instances by the type of song I heard on the radio. When I was frustrated I was listening to Sirius hits 1 countdown and was greeted by the #3 song ‘Die Young’ by Kesha. Such a happy and cheery song and suddenly my mood seemed to have leveled out and by the end of the song I was no longer angry. Instead I was just content and drove home. As you may be piecing together already, the other time I was in my car all happy and fired up. Next thing you know Limp Bizkit’s ‘Break Stuff’ comes through my radio and by the end of the song I had completely mellowed out! I’ve always allowed music to fuel my emotions, i.e bad mood/angry music, good mood/upbeat happy music. I found it really fascinating that the opposite music had completely altered my mood. So I invite anyone to try this and let me know your results!! Whether by email or post a comment here I am really curious to see if others experience the same phenomena or if I’m simply going crazy!

Old But Gold

Here’s a classic that was first released back in 1981 by Ultravox!! An awesome song by an awesome band!!

Feel free to chime in with some comments on how you feel about this classic!!

Oh Love

For all those Green Day lovers the title of this post should not be news to you but for those that may not know it is the first song released from their trilogy ‘uno’, ‘dos’, ‘tres’. It was released two days ago and I refrained from doing a post when I heard it because I wanted to gain some perspectives from other people before I shared my own opinion. After searching around I noticed this songs reception was both good and bad among Green Day fans. However the common ground between everyone was the classification of this as ‘new Green day’. Which led to the division of fans between their older and newer music. Personally I love the song, its catchy, its driving and I really like the lyrics. If you haven’t heard it here’s their official lyrics video:

Let me know what you guys think, I would love to read your comments on where you stand on the song as well as the ‘old’ vs ‘new’ Green Day debate.

Fast Paced Industry, To Fast?

There’s no surprise in the fact that bands nowadays make their money off of touring. Due to internet downloads (illegal ones) record sales have steadily declined for many years now, again no shock or surprise to anyone. However have we (society) created something that takes away from the industry? Long ago bands would put out two or three albums and then go out and tour for a bit then go back to the studio and work hard on another album to take to the road for their fans. In Today’s day and age its album, world tour, quickly produce another album, world tour/ produce an album while this is happening, extend your tour… There are many scenarios that we see with many artists. There are also numerous examples where an artist produces a great first album followed by a not so good second one. Is the demand taking the potential from these bands? Some are obviously able to handle the fast paced life of today’s industry but it seems like the younger bands have a tougher time which is why they come and go so quickly it seems.
