RED

I’ll start by saying that I will do my best to leave biases out of this whole topic! Also if you have yet to see Taylor Swift’s Red tour there will be spoilers in here so please stop reading now!

First off I’ll dive right into the show! From start to finish the sold out Rogers Center crowd of 45, 000 people was deafening loud. Especially since a great portion of them were girls under the age of 16 with the highest pitched screams you will ever here. I was almost hoping at points Taylor wouldn’t say Toronto because following that word would come a tidal wave of ear piercing shrieks! But nevertheless our ears survived and enjoyed Taylor’s 18 song set. Mainly covering Red, Taylor used a lot of dialog to help eat away at her two hour time slot for the evening. Lets just jump right into the breakdown for her first of two shows in Toronto:

The Good:

- Crowd and atmosphere!! The place was rocking all night. I am a sucker for fans screaming lyrics, clapping and all that and tonight she had 45, 000 chiming in on her act which was incredible!

- Apparently in her meet and greet earlier in the day a fan requested a song off her first album which Taylor ended up playing. That song was ‘Tim Mcgraw’!!! Whoever this fan was I love you!

- Entertainment Value, the show was definitely a spectacle! Numerous outfit changes, dancers, transforming stages, fireworks; you name it the visuals were never lacking!

The Bad:

- It might just be me but it seemed like sometimes Taylor was doing this weird cocky stare at the crowd for minutes at a time and it just felt awkward! The girl beside me even commented by yelling ‘Just Start Singing’. I get the effect she was going for but doing it every three songs was getting very annoying!

- Wayyy to much dialog! Every song was introduced in the most scripted and cheesy way that would always end with her completing her sentence with the song title. In a two hour time slot if she would have cut half the dialog she could have easily fit in another 2 or 3 songs!

The Ugly:

- The Sound System!!! This is out of Taylor’s control but it did not do her any favors! There was a massive echo towards the back of the rogers center and it became really annoying as the show went on!

This show had something for everyone! Endless amounts of Pop, a bit of country and a surprisingly heavy bass during ‘Trouble’ which had me feeling like I was watching a dub step show for a few minutes there! All in all her dire fans will love this tour, her regular fans will enjoy it and people like me will have a good night out! For me I am happy to see that the line has finally been drawn between pop and country for her and she can no longer cross back into the country world! Don’t get me wrong her first album is and will always be one of my favorite country albums but no one can try and tell me that either of her last two albums were country! That being said you can’t talk about the music industry without bringing up Taylor Swift because like it or not she is arguably the biggest star across all genres of music and has put up numbers that this industry has not seen for many years, so for that you have to congratulate her!

This is a topic that always brings up a good debate and one I love talking about so please feel free to comment or email in any thoughts, points, arguments, anything really!! We would love to hear them!!

Still Waters

Still Waters, the newest EP from The Como Brothers Band, does not disappoint!! This sophomore album was anything you could have asked for and then some!! From awesome lyrics to catchy riffs, great vocals to awesome instrumentation, the boys brought it! Historically many bands sophomore release is one that does not quite live up to there original album! However The Como Brothers took their time and put out an amazing EP! From the opening lyrics and riff of ‘Parachute’ I was hooked, with a Foo Fighters feel ‘Parachute’ really sets the tempo for this album! The next track ‘Bad Karma’ takes on this Sublime sounding genre and well to put it simply gets your body rocking! The rest well you’ll just have to pick up a copy and listen for yourself!

Day 3 of Canadian Music Week

With a little bit of bar hopping we sure got our fair share of bands in last night!! First off were The Strumbellas at the Horseshoe Tavern! From start to finish they absolutely killed it, a performance that I will not be forgetting anytime soon. Lets break this one down for you guys:

The Good:

- The energy was relentless!! Truly a party from the opening moment

- Great interaction with the crowd!!

- Amazing harmonies between all the band members

The Bad and The Ugly:

Absolutely nothing the show rocked!!!

All in all The Strumbellas entertained a packed Horseshoe and displayed why they are up for their first Juno, which they are certainly proud of as lead singer joked, “If  ’Juno’ what I mean”. It sounded a lot funnier then it reads but the points there!

Next we strolled over to The Rivoli once we found out that the secret guests were one of our favorites, Treble Charger!!! But before we got to flash back to the late 90′s and early 2000′s, we had to go through some more bands! First up were Vancouver natives, The Zolas.

In what seemed to be a shortened set, The Zolas used every second of their time to tear the roof off the Rivoli! Playing to a completely packed house The Zolas gave an amazing performance and an interesting story about the unusual travels of their synth board!

Finally our main event had arrived! As Treble Charger took the stage they reminded us that, “We’re from the 90′s”. But from start to finish they played all their hits and had everyone’s full attention!! The Rivoli was definitely the place to be as it became a star studded affair. Josh Ramsay of Marianas Trench was right in the middle of the crowd jumping and singing along to the forever classic hit, “American Pyscho”.

It was a great night at Canadian Music Week and tonight’s shaping up to be just as good so for now we’ll leave you with the one and only Treble Charger!!

Night 1 of Canadian Music Week!!

A quiet start for us with just one band on our radar for the opening day, however we made sure we picked a show that rocked!! The C’mons  definitely delivered on that front. The C’mons are a Toronto based band who have come together over the years in what seems to be like carefully placed puzzle pieces. Immediate impressions of the band were intriguing, 5 piece band with a female lead singer and a female violinist! We had never heard this bands music prior so the punk rock that emerged took us by surprise but had us thoroughly entertained throughout their 9 song set list. In general we thought lead singer, Steph Bosch did an awesome job on vocals throughout the night. Instrumentally, the band had no obvious flaws however could do more to make the live experience a bit better.

So lets break it down for you:

The Good:

- Steph’s vocals were awesome all night!! Definitely a highlight

- We were big fans of the lyrics, very interesting and catchy!!

- Their new song (no name was given) was awesome, it had a very early years of No Doubt feel which was cool!

The Bad:

- We’re suckers for stage presence and interaction with the crowd. Not that it was ‘bad’ but it was lacking and we wish there would have been some more.

The Ugly:

- Nothing!!!!

All in all The C’mons kicked off the week in a great way for us!! Their show was high energy and driving. Whether you’re a toe tapper, head bobber or body shaker, The C’mons had a lot of their audience moving! We definitely recommend you get out to see this band because it will be a great time!
